California’s Niti Patel: Driving Growth Through Continuous Learning

At ��Ƶappɫ��’s Chino, California location, ERP Analyst Niti Patel plays a key role in strengthening the enterprise systems that support the company’s daily operations. With a background rooted in technically focused, client‑specific work, her role at ��Ƶappɫ�� has expanded her understanding of how a company functions as a unified whole.

“I now have a much broader perspective on our business practices and on how system decisions influence the processes that keep our day‑to‑day operations running,” Niti says. “Having that holistic view has been incredibly valuable.”

In her position, Niti works closely with Business Central and ��Ƶappɫ��’s CRM platform, partnering with teams across the organization to enhance processes, improve efficiency, and support system users. Her responsibilities range from troubleshooting issues and developing reports to creating AI extensions, automating workflows, and building integrations using APIs.

Originally from Mumbai, India, Niti earned her undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Mumbai University before moving to California to complete her master’s degree in computer science at California State University, Long Beach. Her previous experience as a developer working in SQL Python and Business Central gave her a strong foundation for the fast‑paced, problem‑solving nature of her current role.

Since joining ��Ƶappɫ��, Niti has especially enjoyed gaining deeper insight into how different business functions rely on the ERP system to operate smoothly. “To optimize a system, you first need to understand how it exists and how it supports the business,” she says. “I enjoy learning how people work, day to day and finding ways to make those processes more efficient and user friendly.”

Niti also appreciates the collaborative environment that has supported her growth.
“My manager and colleagues have been incredibly helpful and willing to share their knowledge,” she says. “Having that kind of support makes a big difference, especially in a technical role.”

Chris Howes: Strengthening the Frederick–Chino Supply Chain Connection

Chris Howes, Supply Chain Director at ��Ƶappɫ��, holds a degree in Business with a concentration in Industrial Operations Management. His career began as the field of supply chain management was gaining strategic importance and Chris has developed extensive expertise across multiple facets of discipline. This broad experience has provided a practical understanding of the complexities and evolving challenges within global supply chains.

Since the onset of the pandemic, the significance of supply chain management has grown considerably, driven by economic uncertainty and geopolitical shifts. These factors have heightened Chris’s focus on supply chain strategy, resilience, and the pursuit of efficiency and innovation in a rapidly changing environment.

Chris joined ��Ƶappɫ�� in 2007, during a period of significant transformation for the company. Reflecting on this time, Chris notes, “Dr. Philip Brown’s relocation from Europe to the U.S. in 2005 marked a turning point for ��Ƶappɫ��, accelerating the pace of change.” Initially hired as Purchasing Manager, Chris was tasked with building the department from the ground up. Over time, responsibilities expanded to include logistics, ultimately leading to the integration of both functions under Chris’s leadership as Supply Chain Director.

Before joining ��Ƶappɫ��, Chris managed supply chains in the print industry, a sector profoundly impacted by the digital revolution. The resulting industry disruption prompted a career pivot, bringing Chris to ��Ƶappɫ��. As a Maryland native, Chris found it especially rewarding to contribute to a globally respected organization located near his hometown. The role has also provided opportunities for international collaboration and travel, enriching his professional journey.

Currently, Chris serves in a dual capacity, regularly traveling between the company’s headquarters in Frederick, Maryland, and the expanding facility in Chino, California. “Frederick and Chino operate as a unified team, but establishing a robust West Coast presence is essential for domestic logistics and enhanced customer service,” Chris explains. The Chino site, with its focus on sales, engineering, and distribution, is experiencing significant growth and momentum.

A distinctive feature of ��Ƶappɫ��’s supply chain is its vertical integration, with many entities operating within the broader group. This structure streamlines internal coordination but does not insulate the company from global disruptions. “Despite our integrated supply chain, we remain vulnerable to external events—ranging from raw material shortages and port delays to geopolitical and economic instability,” Chris observes. “Success in this environment requires adaptability, foresight, and strong collaboration across all locations.”

Chris highlights the increased public awareness of supply chain issues since the pandemic, noting, “Previously, few people considered the supply chain until disruptions became visible in everyday life.” Recent events, including the collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore, Red Sea shipping disruptions, and evolving tariffs—have further underscored the importance of supply chain management. Navigating these challenges has become a central focus for Chris and his team.

The growing recognition of the supply chain profession is evident in the emergence of specialized academic programs. Chris remarks, “I am now hiring talented individuals who may not have anticipated a career in supply chain operations but are eager to contribute to this dynamic field.”

��Ƶappɫ�� proudly participated once again in the Engineering Exchange program this fall, reinforcing our commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement across our global network. This year, the exchange featured Benedikt Moeller and Michael Klassen, who spent approximately two weeks immersed in each other’s host companies.

Michael, currently with BOPLA, brought his expertise in CNC machining and programming, particularly as BOPLA expands into advanced 4-axis and 5-axis operations. His visit to ��Ƶappɫ�� focused on sharing best practices and exploring ways to optimize processes across similar product lines. This hands-on collaboration fosters innovation and strengthens our ability to support one another across the group.

Meanwhile, Benedikt’s time at BOPLA will be centered around learning through integration. By engaging with various departments, he will explore opportunities to enhance automation and streamline production and assembly processes. The exchange will also provide valuable exposure to unfamiliar areas, broadening his understanding and sparking new ideas.

At the heart of this initiative is a shared belief: bringing together people with diverse perspectives and hands-on experience is essential to driving innovation and efficiency. By working side by side, our teams are not only exchanging knowledge but also building lasting relationships that enhance communication and collaboration across borders.

��Ƶappɫ�� Participates in Frederick’s Day of Action

We have always held a love for Frederick, Maryland, home to our East Coast headquarters. It’s a town rich with culture, creativity, and a strong community. When there’s an issue to be addressed, PM Cares is there to address it. Never is that more apparent than during the annual Day of Action, which happened on Friday, October 3rd.

The Day of Action is, in the website’s own words, “an annual volunteer event that brings the Frederick County community together to address the issues that matter the most. This event is one of the largest single-day volunteer events in Frederick County. coordinates with local employers, individuals, and nonprofits to most effectively support the community.”

A Strong Community

Organizations all around Frederick pitch volunteer projects that are discussed and decided on based on viability, safety, and service. These projects are meant to serve ALICE (Asset Limited, Income, Constrained and Employed) households within the community. More than 350 volunteers ventured into the community to carry out these projects.

A History of Action

��Ƶappɫ�� has remained active in this annual event over the last few years. We have previously assisted public schools, senior living facilities, the YMCA, and the Animal Welfare League.

This year, PM Cares lent a hand in building a new trail at Gambrill State Park, helping to create a beautiful, accessible outdoor space for the community (and visitors) to enjoy. In addition, we collected and donated an array of urgently needed items for donation for Beyond Shelter.

Frederick is a wonderful home to us, and we’re happy to give back to the community!

Monick Da Silva: Making an Impact in Her Adopted, and Home Country

“��Ƶappɫ�� just turned 50. They gave us a book to learn more about the company’s history. I was excited to find out that Brazil, my home country, was one of the first places ��Ƶappɫ�� started doing business in. They’re still active there today, even though they’ve shifted to a different industry. So, working here in Frederick makes me feel like I’m making an impact in two countries that I love.”

So says Monick Da Silva, a cost accountant at ��Ƶappɫ��’s enclosure business in Maryland. Monick has been with the company for 10 months. She earned her undergraduate degree in accounting in Brazil, which she put to immediate use, working for five years at an accounting firm there. Monick: “My final three years there I was working with financial reports, doing analysis. My goal in coming to the U.S. was primarily to learn English, and also to experience life abroad. But once I got comfortable with the language, I applied to an MBA program and earned my graduate degree in accounting.”

Cost accountants play a vital role in any business: analyzing and managing expenses related to production and operations, and identifying areas where costs can be reduced and efficiency improved, ideally leading to increased profitability. As such, in the larger field of accounting, the role of cost accountant is seen as a higher-profile one, as the end product is used by management to make better business decisions. “I do a lot of data and performance analysis,” says Monick, “which I love. It’s very dynamic. I’m always thinking, what insights can the data offer? What can it bring to light that might give leadership greater clarity?”

“Dynamic” is a word that resonates with Monick. From a job perspective, she likes to be where the action is. She also likes interacting with people, and cost accounting gives her plenty of opportunities to do just that: “If something seems off, if my analysis brings something to light that needs further investigation, my job is to track down an answer, which entails me reaching out and meeting with people in different departments. I also handle accounts receivable, so I get to know our customers by name. I like that.”

And if, in the course of Monick’s investigation, she comes up with an idea that could streamline a process or in some way save ��Ƶappɫ�� money, she’s not afraid to speak up; this is because she knows her opinions are genuinely valued. Monick: “It’s part of the culture at ��Ƶappɫ�� that, no matter what your background or level of experience, people listen to your ideas. They value diversity. They get that, when you bring together people with differing opinions, you end up with better decisions.”

And on the subject of decisions, Monick has made an important one: “I see myself at ��Ƶappɫ�� for quite some time. There’s room for real growth here. For someone like me, who’s at the beginning of her career, I see a lot of things I can still learn, things that will challenge me. Combined with the culture, I see a place where I can continue to grow.”

Building a Professional Identity: The Intern Spotlight With Andora Corley

To paraphrase Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest, this isn’t Andora Corley’s first time at the rodeo. The marketing intern, who began her current role in June and will continue through December, is on her second internship with ��Ƶappɫ��.“ My first internship here was as a logistics apprentice, working in the warehouse,” Andora explains. “It was completely different from what I’m doing now—much more physical. But I learned a lot: how to collaborate with people, how to work toward a shared vision. I came back for a second internship, so I guess I like it here! And I guess they like me, too.”

Going from logistics to marketing may seem like a leap, but Andora is majoring in mass communications at Frederick Community College, so the switch made sense. She also credits her mom with helping her make that leap. “My mom is my number one supporter in all things—especially when it comes to encouraging me to ‘go for it’ and try new things. I really wanted to explore marketing. So, when I saw the posting for a marketing internship at ��Ƶappɫ��, I hesitated. But my mom told me to just do it. I’m glad I did.”

While classroom learning laid the foundation, Andora believes her upbringing in a military family gave her the real-world skills she needed to thrive. “You learn to be adaptive, meet new people, and become more comfortable trying new things,” she says. “There weren’t any textbook skills that prepared me for this job—it’s been about life experience.”

“In this position—and in the job in general—I’ve done a lot of things I didn’t think I could ever do,” she adds. “If you told me two years ago, ‘You’re going to be on TV’ or ‘You’re going to be speaking on a panel to business leaders,’ I would have never believed you!”

Each day in marketing looks different. Some mornings begin with communicating with colleagues in California and Germany. Other days involve meeting with other departments on a project or running to the local print shop to edit business cards. “I’m always on the move,” she says. “There’s no ‘typical day’ for me. It’s more like—what does the day bring? Most of the time, I’m working on various projects like redesigning one of our brochures or organizing customer sample data.”

While ��Ƶappɫ�� does get some extra help for the summer by offering internships, it’s also doing a real service for the community: giving aspiring young professionals a chance to learn what it’s like to operate in the world beyond academia. “There was a moment when I thought to myself, ‘I love this,’” Andora says. “Interning here has helped me build my professional identity. I’m learning how to speak to people, how to ask for what I need, how to build relationships and collaborate.” She’s quick to praise the team around her, describing them as welcoming, engaged, and always willing to listen.

“My experience at ��Ƶappɫ�� has been that it’s an environment where you can share your ideas—and people actually take them into consideration,” she says. “They don’t see you as ‘just an intern.’ They value everyone’s input. That’s been one of the most wonderful parts of my time here.”

Asked what advice she’d give to fellow students considering an internship at ��Ƶappɫ��, Andora doesn’t hesitate. “I’d tell them exactly what my mom told me: Go for it!” she says. “You learn something new every day here, no matter what department you’re in or what task you’re tackling. It all adds up to that professional identity I talked about— something you can carry into any job, in any organization.”

Intern Spotlight: For Emma Chang, STEM Runs in the Family

“My mother teaches chemistry in the Frederick County Public School system. My Father is a bioengineer. My sister is studying pharmacy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Finally, I’m studying mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. I guess you could say that STEM careers run in the family.”

So offers Emma Chang, a design engineering intern in the Design Engineering Department at ��Ƶappɫ��. This is Emma’s first internship, and while the experience offers challenges, they’re the kind any intern “entering the workforce” might face. Emma: “This being my first internship, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was not used to reaching out to others for help and taking the initiative on projects with co-workers that had so much experience. It’s also the first time I had to consider the manufacturability of my designs.”

That said, Emma is no stranger to the design game. “I’ve enjoyed math and science since I was young,” she says, “but it wasn’t until I started participating in extracurricular STEM competitions, from elementary school through high school, that I figured out how much I really like to design things and problem-solve.” Those STEM competitions included Destination Imagination, Science Olympiad, and MATHCOUNTS. In high school, she tutored students after school in math and science. She was also an instructor at Mathnasium of Frederick North. As for college, Emma’s now an active member of UMDLoop: the University of Maryland’s Mars Rover Team, which is competing internationally against other teams in the University Rover Challenge.

Emma: “On the UMDLoop team I’m a member of the science subteam, which is responsible for building autonomous soil-sampling and soil-testing systems. We use SolidWorks, a type of CAD software, to model and design our systems.”

As a design engineering intern at ��Ƶappɫ��, Emma’s typical day looks something like this: After arriving at 7:30 AM, she checks her email and Teams notifications before seeing what’s on the day’s agenda. There’s a sprint meeting with the design and application engineering group at 9:00 AM, and then she gets on with the day’s main tasks: “Usually, I have a project where there are a lot of independent parts for me to work and think on, and then also many collaborative parts. An example of this would be my most recent project: making training videos, where I needed to work with various people from all over the building to learn about the topics we’d be covering and to get the content I needed. After lunch, I attend design reviews, work on 3D printing, and do as much training as I can on SolidWorks.”

If there’s ever been a person designed to have an immersive interest in a STEM-related field, it’s Emma Chang. And if there’s ever been a company designed to foster and nurture such native talent, and in the process help it reach its fullest expression, it’s ��Ƶappɫ��. Again, Emma: “The culture of ��Ƶappɫ�� is a very friendly and inviting one. Everyone is welcoming and helpful, and the internship offers a lot of exposure that brings a working-reality to everything I’ve learned so far in my life. I enjoy experiencing all the stages of production: from the beginning of a project to the design, and from the design to the production piece. The best discussions are where we work through the design, consider manufacturability, and then finalize it. I’m incredibly fortunate to have a front-row seat to this talented group of people doing a job I hope to do someday.”

��Ƶappɫ��’s Camila Deyton Named S.T.E.A.M. Professional of the Year

Congratulations to our very own Camila Deyton, who just received the S.T.E.A.M. Professional of the Year Award from the Frederick Chamber of Commerce. S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

Camila began working at ��Ƶappɫ�� in 2022 as an IT Intern. She joined us full-time after graduating from Hood College with a master’s degree. She moved into the Engineering Department and is now the Systems Integration Lead. Here are some excerpts from Camila’s official nomination for the award:

“Camila is driven for continuous improvement. After working in manufacturing engineering in Brazil, she pursued an IT master’s degree from Hood College. Blending her manufacturing expertise with IT knowledge allows Camila to drive technical innovation throughout our production system. She not only understands how to develop the data analysis and systems, she also understands what the output means and how to apply it.”

“She has built her reputation within the engineering team and organization both locally and globally as a collaborative partner. Camila has persisted in the integration of a visual work instruction system with our manufacturing production system—a complex integration launch involving multiple internal and external stakeholders.”
